Drink Your Way to A Healthier Voice

Drinking water is one of the best things for your voice!Life has a habit of getting in the way of good vocal practice & health.

Most of us enjoy an alcoholic drink every now & then, or perhaps as a way of winding down at the end of a stressful day. There's nothing wrong with it, but it doesn't always set you up for having a clear & effective voice on the following day(s).

Alcohol not only dehydrates the body in general, but also your vocal folds (also known as vocal cords which are housed in your larynx/voicebox). The larynx is the gateway to your lungs & as such it has a phenomenal volume of warm air passing through it all day & night as you breathe, passing over the vocal folds at the same time & constantly drying them out. In order to work effectively (vibrate together to make sound) the folds like to be coated in a layer of thin, wet lubricant (mucus). This mucus requires a lot of water to stay diluted & mobile, & becoming dehydrated thickens it so it becomes stickier. This makes the vibrations that the vocal folds try to make (when speaking & singing) more difficult to achieve.

Drinking a glass of water alongside that much deserved glass of your chosen tipple gives the voice more of a fighting chance to relubricate itself.

Increasing your water intake by sipping water small amounts regularly throughout the day will also help you sleep better, your skin will feel more healthy, not to mention your voice working more efficiently, so give it a go & let us know about the improvements you feel.
