What can I hope to achieve? Firstly, and most importantly we aim for you to achieve a better awareness and understanding of how your voice works, both anatomically and viscerally (through sensation). This allows you to progress more swiftly towards what you hope to achieve.
How long does it take? This depends on your final goal. All voice work takes practice and dedication. There are many ‘quick-fix’ exercises that one can use for short-term effect, but this will not achieve anything substantial in the long-run. Even our shortest courses will provide you with plenty of tools to improve your vocal skills.
What happens in a class? This depends of the length and subject of the class. Our classes include: Vocal Coaching: A Brief Introduction to Vocal Anatomy, Vocal Warmup & Stretching, Alignment, Vocal Resonances, Exercises to increase awareness of Inflection & Diction. Accent Neutralisation: A Brief Introduction to Vocal Anatomy, Diction Exercises, Vowel Sound Placement, Consonant placement, Inflection, Tone, Emphasis, Small Talk. Presentation Coaching: A Brief Introduction to Vocal Anatomy, Vocal Warmup & Stretching, Alignment, Vocal Resonances, Exercises to increase awareness of Inflection & Diction, Microphone Technique (where required), Taking Space & Basic Body Language. Teacher’s Voice: A Brief Introduction to Vocal Anatomy, Vocal Warmup & Stretching, Alignment, Vocal Resonances, Exercises to increase awareness of Inflection & Diction, Shouting.
What is RP (Received Pronunciation)? RP is Received Pronunciation. This is considered to be the ‘accent neutral’ yardstick of British English used by actors and vocal coaches. Although it is considered to be ‘neutral’ it can be most closely identified with a southern English sound. We use RP as a ‘yardstick’ by working out how to achieve a regional accent relative to changes necessary to RP.
